依克多因又叫四氫甲基嘧啶羧酸。依克多因使嗜鹽菌免受傷害，它有兩大功能：

Ecdoine is also called tetrahydro methyl pyrimidine carboxylic acid. Ectoine protects halophilic bacteria from harm, and it has two functions:

1）保濕：它是維持滲透壓平衡的重要物質，其獨特分子結構具有很強的水分子絡合能力，能使細胞內的游離水結構化，是非常優秀的天然保濕劑。
